Alishan National Scenic Area is one of Taiwan’s must-visit destinations, a high-mountain escape packed with stunning sunrise views, misty forests, and iconic tea plantations. If you’re heading here, be ready for winding mountain roads, early wake-up calls, and some of the most breathtaking scenery in Taiwan.
The highlight of Alishan is undoubtedly the sunrise over a sea of clouds at Zhushan. To catch it, you’ll need to wake up before dawn and take the Alishan Forest Railway to the viewing platform. Dress warmly, because mornings are chilly even in summer. If the train tickets sell out, there’s a shuttle bus option or you can hike up, but it’s a steep climb in the dark.
Beyond the sunrise, Alishan offers incredible hiking trails through dense cypress forests. The Giant Tree Trail is an easy walk where you’ll see towering ancient trees, some over a thousand years old. The Sisters Ponds and Shouzhen Temple are also worth a stop. If you want a quieter experience, visit during the weekdays to avoid weekend crowds.
Food options in Alishan are limited, so it’s best to grab snacks at the 7-Eleven near the main bus station. If you’re staying overnight, book accommodation in advance—hotels and guesthouses fill up quickly, especially during cherry blossom season in March and April.
Getting to Alishan isn’t the easiest journey. The most common route is taking a train or bus from Chiayi, followed by a winding bus ride up the mountain. If you’re prone to motion sickness, take some medicine beforehand. Once you’re there, the crisp mountain air and breathtaking landscapes make the journey more than worth it. Plan ahead, embrace the early mornings, and you’ll experience one of Taiwan’s most spectacular natural wonders.
