Quebec City is the closest thing North America has to a European fairytale town, but with better poutine. The heart of it is Old Quebec, a UNESCO-listed, cobblestone wonderland where 400 years of history collide with a thriving food scene and an undeniable French charm. If you’re here in the summer, expect street performers, patios spilling onto the sidewalks, and a warm, festive atmosphere. In winter, the whole place looks like a Christmas postcard—if you can handle the cold, this is one of the best places in the world to experience a real winter wonderland.

The best way to explore is on foot. Start in Place Royale, where Samuel de Champlain founded the city in 1608. Wander up to Château Frontenac and take in the view over the St. Lawrence River. If you’re feeling adventurous, hop on the Funiculaire or tackle the Breakneck Stairs to reach the Petit-Champlain district, packed with boutiques, bistros, and old-world charm. Everything is compact, so you can cover a lot of ground without exhausting yourself—unless you hit the city’s steep hills, which are no joke.

Food is a major highlight in Quebec. Start your day with a croissant from Paillard, grab lunch at a cozy bistro like L’Oncle Antoine, and splurge on dinner at Le Saint-Amour or Chez Muffy. If you’re here in winter, the legendary Bonhomme Carnaval serves up Caribou, a warm, boozy drink that’s a lifesaver when it’s -20°C.

Beyond the old town, Montmorency Falls is an easy 15-minute drive or bus ride and is even taller than Niagara. In winter, the waterfall freezes into an ice climbing hotspot. If you have time, Île d’Orléans offers incredible local produce and vineyard tours. Quebec City is both a step back in time and a lively, modern destination with enough history, food, and charm to keep you coming back.
